Water Sports in Koh Phangan

BR blog 4

Koh Phangan is surrounded by crystal clear turquoise water and has some incredible weather all year-round… particularly this time of the year when the wind picks up! So what better way to spend your days than getting the adrenaline pumping with a wide range of watersports? Dive, swim and surf into island fun – here are some of our favourite places to get your watersport on here in paradise.

Diving and Snorkelling

Thailand is one of the world’s most popular dive destinations thanks to its crystal blue waters, coral reefs, tropical fish and countless dive schools. While there are many schools to be found, we recommend getting your diver’s certification at one of these. Several courses are available; recreational or for the more serious enthusiasts – advanced, rescue, first-aid and professional courses.

Bay Residence is the ideal location if you’re hoping to visit Sail Rock – an underwater haven which has some of the most amazing corals, making it one of the most popular diving destinations in the world. Alternatively, for a super easy – yet super incredible – day, simply head down to Haad Salad beach, rent some snorkeling gear and swim around – plenty of beautiful corals can be found by the shore, that close to you!

Stand-Up Paddleboarding

Have you heard about SUP? SUP, or stand-up paddling, is among today’s most popular water sports. Not only is it a fun way to cruise on the open water, it’s also a killer workout, targeting shoulders, legs and core as your muscles hold your balance atop of the paddleboard.

For a chance to head out into the surf on an open battle board, check out Phangan SUP at Charm Beach Resort. The resort also offers SUP Yoga – an even more challenging activity but definitely worth it. Another option is SUP Phangan, where you can also rent windsurfing equipment and kayaks to ride the waves in style.

Looking for that once-in-a-lifetime thrill? Embrace the exhilarating power of the wind with a kiteboarding session. Hop aboard a wakeboard or surfboard as a large kite catches the breeze and pulls you over the water, as you use balance and strength to ride the waves in style.

A challenging extreme sport, kiteboarding requires you to control your balance as well as your kite, as you steer it through the wind and zip through the waves. For this incredible experience, check out one of these kiteboarding schools, where you can get some lessons and hit the sea safely and confidently.

For a relaxing watersport experience, look no further than kayaking. The calm, open waters make the bay a great place to kayak around, allowing you to explore the island from just off the shore.

One of our favourite local journeys is to take a kayak out towards the open waters – or even to just circle the island – seeking out secret beaches, exotic wildlife and incredible views. To kick off your kayak adventure, walk down to Haad Salad or to nearby beaches where you’ll find lots of small shops which offer kayaks to rent at an hourly or daily rate. Another option? Enjoy a boat tour to Ang Thong Marine Park, where you have the opportunity to kayak through some of the most beautiful scenery in the country.

Fun in the Water

Even though the ocean is all around us, that’s not where all the water fun exists. Head towards the center of the island to find a plethora of gushing waterfalls complete with classic rope swings – the perfect spot for an afternoon picnic and a dip in the fresh, cool water. Our favourite waterfalls to visit are Phaeng Waterfall and Paradise Waterfall But don’t forget, some waterfalls are not as active during certain times of the year – drop us a question on Facebook if you’d like a current status update!

Another fun spot is The Challenge Phangan – based on the popular Wipeout – where you may engage in an adrenaline-pumping obstacle course on a lake.

And no trip to Phangan is complete without a visit to the Slip N Fly party, the island’s very own waterpark where 40-metre waterslides catapult you into the air before landing in the island’s largest pool. Daytime parties and a twisty-turny kids slide make it fun for the whole family. Check out their Facebook for the dates of the parties!

Sometimes there’s nowhere like the comfort of your home, and your private infinity pool at Bay Residence is the perfect spot for a refreshing, cool swim among a stunning backdrop. Alternatively, if you’re looking to explore some of the island’s most beautiful spots, the beaches around Bay Residence, such as Haad Salad, have clear waters, great for a swim on a beautiful day (which is almost every day)
